Rory heads up UK Marketing Operations at VML Consulting

Previously, he spent over a decade working across Technology and Strategy

This website started as a place to store Blog posts and has morphed into a digital CV. The idea is not just to show what I think (blogs), but also what I know and what I can do. With that in mind, here’s a quick summary of my career to date:

In 2011, I moved from Taxation into International Development and Microfinance with the United Nations. In early 2014, I moved again into exciting roles in Technology and Transformation Consulting with Capgemini Invent. As part of Invent’s innovation and strategy practice my experience centred on corporate strategy, digital operating model and digital product delivery. I developed a specialism in Agile transformation, co-shaping the Agile Fundamentals course for UK consulting, and personally training and accrediting over 100 Scrum Masters and Product Owners.

In 2021 I shifted to Marketing, using my experience of modern software development techniques - Agile, DevOps, Human Centred Design - to transform marketing organisations and their creative partners, enabling them to go faster and have more impact.

These experiences taught me about tackling global challenges and making a real impact for clients. Most importantly, they dropped me ‘at the coalface’ - whether organising and running small business workshops in a town square in Upper Egypt or huddling with tech teams to re-design test and deployment infrastructure, I learned how to be pragmatic and get change done.

I don’t want to pretend I’m a super-genius LinkedIn guru given most of what I’ve achieved has been a good deal of luck combined with a learning obsession. I’ve also never had a ‘career plan’ in the conventional sense, I’ve just focused on what’s interesting and what motivates me and been lucky that it’s allowed me to work in some great companies on interesting problems with inspirational clients. However, by simple maths, there can’t be that many of us who’ve jumped across most of the major business functions and who’ve spent time in both delivery and strategy

Outside of the office

The sea, the mountains and live music. These, along with my family, are the things that give me energy and inspiration outside the office
